The Football West team recently attended the annual Seniors Have a Go Day, an event run by the Seniors Recreation Council of WA which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Seniors Have a Go Day highlights the importance of physical and mental activity for seniors, as well as encouraging socialising and exercise opportunities.

Football West is working in partnership with Football Australia to grow Walking Football throughout WA and was delighted to get on board with the Seniors Have a Go Day.

Football West Club Development Officer Bianca Glanville said: “This is the largest single event that targets over 55s and that is the same demographic Football Australia is targeting through Walking Football.

“Interest at Have a Go Day in the Walking Football program was strong and it will be great to get more people involved.

“We had a lot of women coming up and taking a flyer with the locations of all of the Walking Football hubs and saying it would be great for their husbands. We also had a lot of women who spoke about signing up for themselves.

“Walking Football is a terrific way to exercise but it is also great for mental health through interaction and making new friends.

“Overall, it was a positive experience and was great for the seniors to see that they can still be included in their favourite sport without having to worry about the physical requirements of a conventional football game.”
