State League Night Series: Sorrento to meet Dianella in final

Sorrento FC will meet Dianella White Eagles in the State League Night Series final.

Sorrento won a second penalty shoot-out in a week to defeat Joondalup United in their semi-final at Percy Doyle Reserve.

Then Dianella knocked out holders Mandurah City 3-0 to book their place in next Friday night’s decider at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.

Sorrento were on course for a comfortable victory after an early Clay Gibbs effort then an own goal had them 2-0 in front at half-time.

And that was how it stayed until the last few minutes when United scored twice in quick succession through substitute Andrew Flint and Tyler Holden.

The 2-2 draw was the same result as last year’s inter-divisional play-off semi-final second leg, when Sorrento were condemned to relegation from the NPL.

This time it was the Gulls who were smiling as they won the shoot-out 4-2.

In the other semi, Dianella also led 2-0 at the break but on this occasion, they saw the game out thanks to a double from Paul Zimarino and one for Angel Andres Rivera.
