Kilkenny to guest for Gold Fields WA Men’s State Team against Glory

UPDATE: A 23-man squad has been named to represent WA in the Gold Fields Challenge Cup against Perth Glory at the State Football Centre this Sunday.

Perth SC with five players and Olympic Kingsway (four) are well represented in the Gold Fields WA Men’s State squad, as well as NPLWA - Men’s champions Perth RedStar, Balcatta Etna and Bayswater City who have three each.

The two goalkeepers are Perth SC’s Rocco Liberti and RedStar’s Liam Reddy, a former Perth Glory stalwart.

One of Reddy’s former Glory team-mates in the A-League will catch the eye of supporters. Midfielder Neil Kilkenny will guest for the State Team, having impressed after being invited to train with the squad.

The former Leeds United man was part of the Glory side that finished top of the A-League in 2019 and reached the grand final. He also helped Melbourne City win the 2016 Australia Cup (then FFA Cup) and Western United beat City in the 2022 A-League grand final.

Football West Policy and Advocacy Manager Gareth Naven said: “Once again I would like to thank the players who have made themselves available to represent WA and the clubs for their assistance. I also want to acknowledge our State Team naming partners Gold Fields for their ongoing support.

"The players and coaching team are looking forward to the game and the chance to test themselves against Perth Glory.

"Neil Kilkenny epitomises what it takes to be a professional and is a great example for our state's best young players to try and emulate. The opportunity for him to come in and instil his wealth of experience on the training ground and the change room in the lead-up to the game will give the players valuable insights into life at the next level."

Also in the squad is Olympic Kingsway's Tyler Garner, who this week was named in the Australian national Futsal squad, the Futsalroos.
