George, Nicol lead RedStar to NPLM Night Series success

Perth RedStar go into the new season with more silverware in the cabinet following their NPLM Night Series final success last night.

Two goals from captain Daryl Nicol and one by man-of-the-match Matthew George gave RedStar a 3-1 win over Bayswater City at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.

But they had to do it the hard way, with Bayswater making a flying start. First Samuel Dweh was denied by RedStar keeper Liam Reddy, before Joshua Anasmo nodded in Chris Jackson's header back across goal with under three minutes on the clock.

RedStar levelled within minutes of the restart. Referee Stewart Beattie penalised Samuel Dweh for handball from Nicholas Walsh's cross and Nicol sent City's semi-final hero Lewis Italiano the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Dweh almost restored Bayswater’s lead when he crashed a drive against the crossbar. Instead, it was RedStar who scored a second when George was shown inside by the Baysie defence and he curled a fantastic shot past Italiano and inside the post.

Bayswater thought they had equalised through Luke Palmateer’s header but Reddy clawed the ball out on the goalline. Then late on Cam Teece robbed Dennis Galan and looked certain to score but the substitute failed to hit the target.

A minute from time RedStar clinched the season’s first silverware when George broke down the left and cut across for Nicol to sidefoot home.
