First Gold Fields WA Paras Football Championship

The inaugural Gold Fields WA Paras Football Championship takes place this month.

The WA Gold and WA Black teams will face each other twice over the weekend of October 9-10. The first match is at E&D Litis Stadium, Leederville, followed by the return at Hale School in Wembley Downs as part of an Inclusive Football Festival.

And the winning team will lift the Pat Amato Cup, named in tribute to the WA Paras player who will feature in the WA Gold team.

Football West Program Lead - Community Melissa Gmeiner said: “With the previous two National CP Championships being cancelled due to Covid, Football West and the WA Para Football Program were keen to provide a competition for the WA Paras to play in.

“The WA Paras collected a best-ever silver in the 2019 National Championships – no doubt both teams will be doing all they can to win gold during our event.”

CP Football is a version of football adapted to support the participation of athletes with Cerebral Palsy, Acquired Brain Injury and Stroke. It is played in a seven-a-side format, using FIFA rules with minor modifications.

“These are the top CP Football players in the state and this is an opportunity for people who may not yet have watched the WA Paras in action to come and see what they are about. It is free entry and you’ll get to enjoy some great competition and learn about CP Football from very talented players,” Ms Gmeiner said.

Following the second match the WA Paras will announce its CP Football Team of the Decade.

  • There will be a United Reds Football League match before the first match at E&D Litis Stadium on Saturday October 9. The URFL is an Inclusive league for children aged 8-12 of all abilities and sees Football West partner the Manchester United Foundation, Inclusion Solutions and Telethon.
  • The Inclusive Football Festival at Hale School will hold the Special Olympics State Games ahead of the second Gold Fields WA Paras Football Championship game.
