Big guns through in Hyundai Women's State Cup

Hyundai NTC continued their winning run with a 6-0 victory over UWA Nedlands at E&D Litis Stadium in Round One of the Hyundai Women’s State Cup.

A terrible run of injuries meant UWA finished the game three players down, ruling out any small chance they had of following up their Women’s League Night Series final win over NTC U21s with an upset defeat of the senior NPLWA side.

Anna Powell scored a hat-trick for NTC, who made it four wins from four in all competitions this season.

Two of her goals came in the first half, either side of one from Louise Tana, as the home side led 3-0 after 45 minutes. In the second period, former Fremantle City player Powell completed her treble, while Klaudia Houlis and Maja Archibald also netted to set up Ben Anderton’s team for this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with Perth SC.

UWA Nedlands will hope for better luck when they return to league duties away at Armadale, as they look to continue their solid start in the second tier.

NPLWA – Women’s leaders Perth SC progressed through to the next round after a 12-0 win over Women’s League side Mandurah City.

The Azzurri shared the goals around with Matilda Bohm netting a hat-trick, while Jaime Duncanson, Stella Zampogna, Abbey Meakins and Ella Lincoln registered a couple of goals each.

Balcatta avoided an upset as they saw off Perth AFC 3-1.

Tia Stonehill, Kimberly McCartney and Lauren Continibali got the goals for the 2021 State Cup runners-up, who also reached the semi-final stage last season.

The only remaining team outside of the NPL are Hamersley United after their 8-0 win over Armadale in an all-Women’s League tie.

Former Balcatta forward Chrstiane Astorp scored five times for Betim Ziba’s side, while Brianna Patrick grabbed a first-half brace and Royan Norman got the other.

Elsewhere, 2021 State Cup winners Murdoch University Melville won 4-0 against Subiaco’s Women’s League team.

David Biancuzzo’s team had four individual scorers on the day with Sophie Meaden, Charli Wainwright, Nikita Strickling and Jessica Johnson all on target.

Subiaco’s NPL side had better fortunes as Dakota Van Vugt scored twice against her former side in a 2-0 win at Curtin University.

Perth RedStar and Fremantle City advanced after Port Kennedy and Sorrento respectively forfeited their ties.
