2024 Men's State League Night Series: Flying starts for Ashfield, Joondalup United and UWA

Ashfield and Joondalup United began the State League Night Series in style on Sunday with big wins in Group B.

Hosts Ashfield turned over Kingsley Westside 4-0 while Joondalup beat Forrestfield United 5-2.

A double from Ravi Raj Singh and goals for Conor McCann and Dougal Kindness gave Ashfield a convincing victory at Paintseal Arena.

Meanwhile, Joondalup had to show character in their game after finding themselves 2-0 down after half-an-hour.

Two goals from Noah Appleby saw Forrestfield take early control. Jay Lang quickly pulled one back and by half-time it was 2-2 after Tyler Holden levelled.

Lang gave Joondalup the lead 12 minutes after the restart with his second, and it was soon 4-2 thanks to Sam McKearnen. Joondalup’s win was rounded off by Charles Breen.

Kalamunda City produced a great fightback to share the points with Mandurah City at Poolmart Mandurah Stadium.

Night Series holders Mandurah raced into a 3-0 lead inside 25 minutes with goals from Brian Patterson and Robbie Galvin (2).

And it stayed that way until after the hour-mark when Samir Ramos and Lal Cung brought City back into the game. Patterson looked to have made matters safe for Mandurah with his second, only for Kalamunda to score twice in the final five minutes to earn a thrilling 4-4 draw. First Jose Zuniga netted, then Gaston Bazet struck to salvage an unlikely point.

The other game in Group E saw Rockingham City and Canning City finish 1-1. Dylan Rogers opened the scoring for Rockingham after an hour, with Thomas Kinnane levelling from the spot.

In Group F, UWA Nedlands had a great start as they beat Quinns 4-0 at Percy Doyle Reserve. Adam Falcone, Daniel Iuliano, Jed Afenyo and Oliver Lebihan got the goals.

The other game between Gwelup Croatia and Curtin University finished 2-2. Robert Ferrante put Gwelup ahead before Curtin turned the game around with goals from Dylan Kelly and Janno Saks. Then in the last minute, Ryan Johnson struck to rescue a point for Gwelup.
