The Gold Fields WA State Paras have made a terrific start to the 2023 National Para Football Championships, which began at the WA State Football Centre today.
This is the first time Perth has hosted the tournament and the home fans were not left disappointed after day one.
In the first match, they overwhelmed Queensland 10-0. Pararoos star Connor Bunce scored three and Iain Carmichael two, with Chris Minutillo, Noah Bremmer-Bell, Giacomo Izzo also among the scorers.
Then in a terrific encounter late in the afternoon, WA held tournament favourites NSW 1-1. Daniel Campbell opened the scoring for the Blues, before Allan Sarago Ah-Khee followed up to level. The Gold Fields side had to endure some late pressure, but with Bunce marshalling the side at the back they held on for a valuable point.
WA kick off day two with a clash against Victoria at 9.30am WST.
The day began with the opening ceremony, where Football West CEO Jamie Harnwell and Football Futures Foundation Executive Officer Brent Headley both spoke, while among the VIPS were Perth Federal MP Patrick Gorman and DLGSC Executive Director Sport and Recreation Matt Hayes. City of Kwinana Mayor Barry Winmar delivering the Welcome to Country.
Running from 3 - 8 October 2023 at the world-class WA State Football Centre, five teams will be in contention to be crowned national champions in the 19th edition of the competition.
The tournament will hold additional significance this year as it will be the final opportunity to impress the CommBank ParaMatildas and CommBank Pararoos head coaches prior to their selection of the Australian squads for the Men’s and Women’s 2023 IFCPF Para Asian Cup.
