United Reds Football League up and running

The recently launched United Reds Football League competition continues this Sunday with Round Three matches taking place.

Maccabi FC and Victoria Park meet at Maccabean Memorial Oval, while at Yokine Reserve Dianella JSC take on Baldivis Districts.

The inclusive URFL is a joint venture between Football West, the Manchester United Foundation, Inclusion Solutions and Telethon.

It offers opportunities for children aged 8-12 years to join a local club, wear their club shirt and belong to their communities through football.

Football West Community Participation Lead Sarah Du Plessis said: “We are excited to have the inaugural league kick off and look forward to supporting the football clubs, players and community throughout the season.

“The United Reds League will further highlight the journey of ensuring football is one of the most inclusive and accessible sports in Western Australia.”

After the first round of games on July Inclusion Solutions consultant Andy Nankin: “It’s amazing to see clubs offering opportunities for all children to play the world game. Children with disabilities are often segregated into programs focus only on participation. The URFL offers all children to be values members of their club and wearing their club jersey with pride.”

An Inclusion Solutions statement said: “This is the first of its kind in WA where children with disabilities are welcomed to play at amateur level, representing their clubs in a full integrated league.

“This is the first time Manchester United have partnered any organisation outside of the UK. The first round saw three games across the Perth metro take place. Clubs are still recruiting and children thinking about joining the league are encouraged, especially those with a disability.

“Victoria Park SC, Western Knights SC, Maccabi FC and Baldivis Districts FC are welcoming children aged 8-12 to join. Well done to all the boys and girls.”
