Female first for NPL

Football West will supply all female team to officiate an NPL match for the first time this weekend.

Jess Byrd will referee Sunday’s NPLWA Women’s clash between Balcatta and Fremantle City, with Caleigh Ormerod and Claire Batey the assistant referees.

And the Under-23 fixture between the sides immediately beforehand will see Ormerod in the middle and Batey and Libby Caldwell running the line.

All four officials are regulars in the NPLWA Women’s competition and Byrd, Ormerod and Caldwell also officiate in the NPLWA Men’s and State League competitions.

Football West Referee Co-Ordinator Simon Hicks said: “We are delighted to be able to appoint Jess, Caleigh, Libby and Claire to these matches.

“The introduction of the NPLWA Women’s competition has raised the bar for female football, not only for our players and coaches but also for our match officials.

“The appointment of an all-female officiating team to our top women’s competition is testament to the quality of female officials we are developing at Football West through our initiatives such as free female-only Level 4 Referee courses and the All Flags Referee Academy.”

Football West has a free female-only Level 4 Referee course at Gibbney Reserve, Maylands, on Saturday 15 August. All applicants must be a minimum of 14 years of age. To reister CLICK HERE
