Belt Up: Donna’s dice with death

Belt Up: Donna’s dice with death

With the holiday season in full swing and New Year’s Eve almost here, Football West and our partner the Insurance Commission of Western Australia would like to remind everybody to wear a seatbelt.

We would also like to to thank Murray District Rangers Club Liaison Donna Duxbury for sharing her story and urging motorists to Belt Up.

Donna survived a serious accident in her Toyota Prado and believes she would have been killed if she had not buckled up.

“Before I could say anything the car hit my driver’s side, flipping my car three times and landing driver’s side down. My car skidded 500 metres down the road.”

Donna said a member of the emergency services said it was a shock that she had survived.

“If you are not wearing a seatbelt, nothing else is going to matter,” she said.

Commission Secretary Kane Blackman said: “The Insurance Commission is proud to support Football West through the Belt Up campaign.

“The Belt Up message continues to be important for the Insurance Commission.

“Last year, 95 people weren’t wearing a seatbelt when they were killed or seriously injured in a car crash. That’s over seven football teams. They could have been your teammates, your family or your friends.

“You wouldn’t hit the pitch without shinpads, so don’t drive without a seatbelt.

“We don’t want to see anyone injured in a crash, and less severe injuries from crashes result in lower claims costs and more affordable insurance premiums for motorists.

“We hope everyone had a great Christmas and wish everyone a happy and safe New Year! Don’t forget to look out for each other on our roads – and Belt Up!”
