Bright lights up Phoenix win

South West Phoenix maintained their one-point lead over Maddington White City in the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division after both sides won on Sunday.

Goals from Rory Binnie and Ababio Bright gave Phoenix a 2-1 win at Kwinana United, who now trail the leaders by 11 points although they do have two games in hand. Glen Smith netted for the hosts.

Two-goal Jose Zuniga led the way for Maddington in their 4-0 victory at Quinns. Captain George Burke and Samir Ramos scored Maddington’s others, before the pair were sent off along with Quinns duo Thomas Ashworth and Connor McReady.

Quinns remain fourth, three points in front of North Perth united who have played one game fewer. The 2020 champions drew 0-0 on Sunday against UWA Nedlands. Jaguar and Queens Park also played a goalless draw.

Hamersley Rovers’ dwindling hopes of avoiding relegation seem over after they went down 2-1 to second-bottom Joondalup United. Rovers are now 15 points behind Queens Park and Leeming Strikers, who are third and fourth bottom. The win put Joondalup within four points of the two sides just out of the drop zone.

The final match of Round 18 saw Wembley Downs defeat Leeming 2-1. Reece Terry’s goal had Strikers ahead at half-time, but James Kilbee’s equaliser and an own goal from Terry.
