Two new Walking Football competitions

Football West is seeking expressions of interest for two Walking Football competitions to be held in 2019.

Both competitions will run for eight weeks, the first from April to June followed by one from August to October.

The venues have yet to be confirmed but the competitions will be held at various clubs in metropolitan and regional WA.

Football West Inclusive Participation Officer Gordon Duus said: “We are excited to announce the first formal Walking Football competition in Western Australia following on from the resounding strong positive feedback from the state Walking Carnival in October 2018.

“Now is the time for clubs to step up and grow, using their expertise and mini pitches to reconnect with past and retiring players and people in the community who might struggle with the traditional 11-a-side format.”

Football West will support clubs in adapting to the new format and growing their club membership base. The format is targeted primarily at older players with a rule during competitive play requiring a majority of players on the pitch to be aged 50+. However, younger players are also welcome.

Duus added: “Two competitions either side of mid-winter will bring the community out into clubs.

“At clubs, players can set their own journey; in-house training and game participation or inter-club competition and a pathway for advanced players to qualify for a future Australian team to take on the world, including in the next world cup expected to be 2021.”

The closing date for expressions of interest is January 31, 2019.
