Football West to launch NPLWA – Women’s competition

Female football in Western Australia will move into an exciting new era next year with the launch of the inaugural National Premier League WA – Women’s competition.

All clubs across metro and regional areas who meet the criteria are encouraged to apply to join the competition, which will act as a second tier below the Westfield W-League.

Eight clubs are set to be admitted for the first season.

The new model for elite female football is being introduced after consultation between Football West and clubs and other stakeholders.

Football West Head of Development Jamie Harnwell said: “The introduction of an NPLWA – Women’s competition for season 2020 will be a huge boost to the game here in Western Australia.

“The change will see the development of a vibrant and sustainable competition that will engage the players, coaches and supporters in a new way. As well as providing existing players with the chance to play in quality football facilities it will also serve as a target for young female players to set their sights on in future years.

“There has been overwhelming support for the introduction of the new competition and Football West is looking forward to a competitive application process and encourage any interested clubs to contact Football West to discuss their submission before applying.”

The objectives of the NPLWA – Women’s are:

    • Creating the strongest, most competitive women’s and girls’ competition in Western Australia

    • Bringing the women’s and girls’ game in Western Australia into the Talented Player Pathway

    • Building premier clubs by setting standards and benchmarks in areas of youth development, coaching, governance, facilities, reporting and financial responsibility

    • Implementing a sustainable competition structure which maximises opportunities for talented players

The application process for selection into the NPLWA for the 2020 season opens on 24 October 2019 and will close at 5pm on 15 November 2019.

The applications will be evaluated by an independent assessment panel with all clubs notified the result of their applications on 2 December 2019.
