Wembley Downs are heading into the new season on a high after a convincing win in the Belt Up Amateur Night Series final.

Two goals from Halil Russo and one for Noah Thavaseelan gave Wembley a 3-0 win over Jaguar FC.

This is the second time that Wembley have appeared at the Sam Kerr Football Centre and twice they have come away clutching the silverware. Last October they won the Belt Up Amateur Cup with victory against Perth AFC.

Before the game on Saturday many people fancied Jaguar to win following their excellent semi-final defeat of Premier Division champions Emerald.

But Wembley, who needed penalties to get past Kelmscott Roos in their semi, matched their opponents in a good first half before pulling away.

Ninety seconds after the restart Wembley went ahead when Russo collected the ball on the left wing and brilliantly worked his way past three defenders before firing high past Jags keeper Michael Dudek.

Nine minutes later Wembley doubled their advantage when Dudek could only push Sam Mattock's free-kick into the path of Thavaseelan, who netted the second.

Wembley put the game to bed 15 minutes from time when Jaguar's defence did not deal with a simple ball down the middle and Russo nipped in to curl home from the edge of the box.

Football West would like to thank the Insurance Commission of Western Australia’s Acting Chief Finance Officer Will Stirling who presented the trophy and medals.
