Top two march on in Amateur Premier title race

South West Phoenix and Maddington White City continued their toe-to-toe scrap at the top of the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division on Sunday.

Phoenix remain a point ahead of their title rivals with four games to play after the Round 19 fixtures.

Captain Lee Stewart took his season tally to 22 with a brace in Phoenix’s 3-0 win at Queens Park. Lydon Hodgkiss scored the other.

Maddington also enjoyed a convincing result, 3-1 at UWA Nedlands. Jose Zuniga scored two and Jhonatan Barbosa one for City, who were briefly pegged back following a Walter Torres equaliser from the penalty spot.

Kwinana United retain an outside interest in the league following their 5-1 stroll at Joondalup United. Lee Bates was the star man with four goals.

Kwinana are 11 points off top spot but have two more games to play than the top two, starting tomorrow with a visit to Leeming Strikers tomorrow. On Sunday, Leeming beat North Perth United 3-1 with Kieran Witt, Justin Onek and Cameron Anderson on target.

In fourth place are Quinns who also won 5-1 on the weekend, against Hamersley Rovers. Ryan McCready helped himself to a hat-trick.

Another player to collect a treble was Matthew Devereux, whose goals came for Wembley Downs in their 3-3 draw at Jaguar.
