Sub Hartmann keeps Phoenix top of the league

South West Phoenix and Maddington White City’s ongoing title tussle in the Belt UP Amateur Premier Division shows no sign of letting up with the two frontrunners again winning on the weekend.

Leaders Phoenix beat second-bottom Joondalup United 3-2, while it was a lot more comfortable for City as they thrashed Leeming Strikers 6-0.

Nathan Hartmann was the late hero for Phoenix, coming off the bench against Joondalup United and finding the winner 10 minutes from time.

Lee Stewart’s 23rd goal of the season put South West ahead inside six minutes, and after Andreas Bouzinekis’ equaliser soon after Phoenix were soon back in the lead when Ababio Bright struck. Joondalup, desperate for points as they look to find safety, sniffed an unlikely point when Ryan Pellow brought them level again. But six minutes after coming on, Hartmann delivered with the winner.

It was an easier afternoon for Maddington, who netted three times in the final 10 minutes to rub salt in Leeming wounds. The hosts were two up at the break thanks to goals from Jose Zuniga and captain Cesar Orozco.

Four minutes after the interval Yohann Crampon added a third and that was how it remained until late in the match when Samir Ramos scored twice and Gaston Bazet made it six.

The results keep Phoenix a point ahead of Maddington with both sides having three matches to play, as the pair seek the one promotion spot to the State League.

Third met fourth at Kelly Park where Kwinana United and Quinns played out a 2-2 draw. Ryan McCready’s eighth-minute opener for Quinns had been cancelled out by a Jake Daley double, only for Guy Armstrong to earn the away side a point.

Surprise of the day came at Carine Open Space where already relegated Hamersley Rovers – previously one point out of a possible 48 – thumped UWA Nedlands 5-1. Ryan Stewart (2), Mark Hunt, Jordan Nastov and Craig Cheesman had Rovers 5-0 up before Mighael Muller’s late effort for UWA.

In other games, Mabor Thomas gave Jaguar a 1-0 win at North Perth United while a Matthew Devereux brace set up Wembley Downs for a 3-0 victory over Queens Park. Daniel Raine got the other.
