South West Phoenix wrap up Women's State League title

South West Phoenix are Women’s State League champions for the second time.

The unbeaten Bunbury side wrapped up the 2021 title in style, winning 5-1 at ECU Joondalup in their rescheduled Round Eight fixture. They will receive the trophy after their final game of the season at home against UWA Nedlands this Sunday.

A week after beating the same opposition 3-0, Phoenix were soon into their stride and were ahead on 19 minutes through Lucy Darbyshire. Lara Graham then scored twice in four minutes to make the game safe, before Jana Garcia’s penalty on the stroke of half-time brought ECU back into the match.

The Jacks’ interest lasted less than a minute of the second half, with Salli Howden-Woodland re-establishing the visitors’ three-goal advantage. And that was extended on 76 minutes when Carrie affray put away a penalty.

If Phoenix avoid defeat in their last match then they will have lost just once in the league across two seasons.

Sorrento moved into second place above UWA after beating Mandurah City 2-0 in their Round 12 catch-up game. First-half goals from Jayde Keogh and Emma Pickerill won the points for the Gulls.

Armadale enjoyed a comfortable afternoon at Gwelup Croatia in their rescheduled Round 11 encounter. Two goals from Lucy Bamber and a Coreena Whyte strike were too much for Gwelup.

There were two games in the Women’s Amateur League and one stand-out performance.

Kate Nolan was the star player, scoring six goals in Fremantle City (Maroon)’s 8-1 romp at Ellenbrook United in their rescheduled Round 10 game.

The other fixture was from Round Six, Hamersley Rovers defeating Perth AFC 1-0. Tara Lind got the goal.
