South West Phoenix move ahead of UWA

South West Phoenix look to have one hand on the State League Division One trophy after Sunday’s Round 18 fixtures.

While Phoenix were sticking seven past Armadale without reply, nearest rivals UWA Nedlands went down 3-1 at third-place Sorrento. The results mean Phoenix have a three-point advantage over UWA with a game in hand.

South West Phoenix took the game by the scruff of the neck with two goals from Savannah Olsthoorn in the opening nine minutes. It was 3-0 at half-time, Alesia Riches netting on 26 minutes, and the one-way traffic continued after the interval. Grace Miller made it four, Salli Howden-Woodland five, then Lara Graham and Lucy Darbyshire joined in the fun.

UWA were unable to keep pace with Phoenix as they lost at Percy Doyle Reserve. They started brightly, Brigitte Morgan opening the scoring after five minutes. But Sorrento were soon level thanks to captain Jodie Brough, and early in the second half Chelsea Russell put the Gulls in front. UWA had to chase the game but the decisive fourth goal of the game went the way of Sorrento as Jayde Keogh wrapped up the points.

Molly Elphick (2), Amy Buchanan and captain Frankie Murray were on target for ECU Joondalup in their 4-1 victory at Mandurah City, whose goal came from Amy Terrell.

Gwelup Croatia are four points clear of bottom club Stirling Macedonia after Sunday’s 3-1 win at Macedonia Park. Alyssa Tunzi and Gabriella Saraceni had Gwelup 2-0 up at the break, while Leona Russell scored an own goal four minutes from the end to make it three. There was still enough time for Katerina Elgueta to score a consolation goal for Stirling.

With Women’s Amateur League leaders Fremantle City (Black) having a bye on Sunday, there was a chance for Curtin University to cut the gap at the top to three points. Unfortunately for Curtin, they could only draw 1-1 at Forrestfield United. Brooke Cumming had the visitors in front at the break but Amber Denness levelled for Forrestfield in the second half.

A hat-trick from Tara Lind helped third-place Hamersley Rovers beat ECU Joondalup 5-0, while Dareskadar Tamru scored three as Northern Redbacks defeated UWA Nedlands 4-2. Tamru has scored 21 goals in 12 matches this season. Another player who got a treble was Rosa Morgan in Ellenbrook United’s 4-0 win at home against Balga.
