Quinns set for Top Four Cup

Quinns took a big step towards securing a Top Four Cup place in Men’s State League Division One with a 2-1 win over Swan United.

Quinns have a six-point gap on fifth place with three games remaining, although they had to work hard for this latest win.

Swan were fighting for their State League Division One status and took the lead on 16 minutes when Deng Dut scored his first of the season from the penalty spot.

The hosts hit back though when Ben Hinshelwood headed in a 17th goal of the campaign and they completed the turnaround eight minutes from time when Kade Fearnall volleyed past Nicholas Stone for the winner.

Quinns' security in fourth place was aided by fifth-placed Fremantle City, who gave up a goal lead in a 2-1 defeat to Western Knights.

Matt Sparrow whipped in a free-kick which was headed in by Thomas Kinnane, but Alex Kretowicz stole in to make it 1-1 on 32 minutes.

The winner came 14 minutes from time when Ciaran Byrne ran through on goal, with the last touch coming off Hayden Stevens, as Knights mathematically guaranteed a post-season place.

In-form Joondalup United all but secured their position in the Top Four Cup too, as Jay Lang's stunning free-kick gave them a 2-1 win at Olympic Kingsway.

Asa Sippits arrived at the back post to put David Tough's side in front, but United drew level when Brad McDonald volleyed home in the driving rain for 1-1.

Joel Sollitt was sent off just before half-time for the visitors, but it mattered little for Neil Jennings' side who won a fifth game in a row thanks to Lang's set-piece winner with four minutes to play.

At the bottom of the league, Ashfield look set to battle with Swan for the relegation play-off place following a 3-0 defeat to Mandurah. Ashfield are eight points from 10th-place Subiaco and a point clear of Swan with three games left.

Ashfield fought hard for the first hour of the game before they conceded three Mandurah goals in the final half-hour.

Scottish striker John Baird was appointed head coach of the Dolphins for 2022 earlier this week. He marked the announcement with the opener on 60 minutes from the penalty spot.

Craig Barker picked out the bottom corner for 2-0 five minutes later before Taylor Carter's fourth in four games capped back-to-back City wins.

Elsewhere, Forrestfield United continued their improved recent form as they drew 1-1 with Subiaco at Rosalie Park to extend their unbeaten run to four.

Rhys Loxley had given Graham Normanton's side the lead from the spot, but Elliot Ireland levelled with a penalty of his own as the game finished all square.

Finally, new champions Stirling Macedonia were held 3-3 away at UWA Nedlands in an entertaining game at UWA Sports Park.

NPL-bound Stirling went two up as Sam Wynne side-footed home after six minutes, before Luke Garas' penalty doubled the lead for Ian Ferguson's side.

But the hosts rallied to hit the lead and threaten Stirling's 15-game winning streak. Ivwanaji Simbile pulled one back before the break with a brilliant overhead kick, before Dhamon Kalamaras' close-range strike made it 2-2.

An upset was on the card when Samuel Kent rolled in to put UWA 3-2 up, but veteran striker Gavin Knight preserved Stirling's 17-game unbeaten run with his 18th goal of the campaign.
