Phoenix maintain perfect start

South West Phoenix and UWA Nedlands have moved five points clear of third place in the Women’s State League Division One following Sunday’s Round Seven fixtures.

Phoenix made it five wins from five but were pushed all the way by Armadale before winning 1-0. Salli Howden-Woodland made the breakthrough 11 minutes from time.

In the day’s big game, UWA came out on top 3-1 against Sorrento. Emily Dinsdale and Rebecca Dudek struck before the break to give Nedlands a 2-0 lead. Isabella Asphar threw the Gulls a lifeline six minutes from time, only for Ashley Harling to make it 3-1 a minute later.

Sorrento remain third and ECU Joondalup fourth, even though they were beaten 5-3 at home by bottom club Mandurah City. Goals from Frankie Murray, Talissa Hollis and Tinette Van Niekerk had ECU 3-1 ahead at the break. But captain Melissa Spillman got her second of the day on 52 minutes and that inspired Mandurah, who ran over the top of the hosts to pick up their first points of the season. Lauren Davidson made it 3-3, Sarah Stone put City ahead and Keeley Hughes completed the job.

In the day’s other game, Ana Denona scored directly from a corner in Gwelup Croatia’s 2-2 with neighbours Stirling Macedonia.
