National Youth Championships, NTC Challenge cancelled

Football West has received official confirmation from Football Australia that the following tournaments have been cancelled due to the ongoing restrictions and lockdown in NSW and other states due to COVID-19:

  • 2021 National Youth Championships for Boys
  • 2021 National Youth Championships for Girls
  • 2021 NTC Challenge (for U17 Girls)

Football West Chief Football Officer Jamie Harnwell said: “This is hugely disappointing and was not an easy decision to make. However, the priority is the safety and wellbeing of players, coaches, match officials and others.”

This is the second year in succession these championships have been cancelled.

“As in 2020, Football West is committed to providing opportunities for our Gold Fields State players to be identified and represent Western Australia in 2021,” Mr Harnwell said.

“We are currently working on alternative events and activities both here and interstate if restrictions allow, to ensure that players can be identified by national team coaches and represent Western Australia.

“We appreciate the support we have received from Gold Fields, who are the name sponsor of all of our State teams.

“The same applies to Hyundai, the name sponsor of the Football West NTC program. The NTC Challenge is a major event for the girls in the program.”

Information will be released in the coming weeks regarding new events. Meanwhile, trials and training for the Gold Fields State team programs will continue as planned.
