Maddington beat Phoenix in top-of-the-table clash

Maddington White City made a potentially key move towards the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division title and likely promotion to the State League with a 3-0 win over nearest rivals South West Phoenix.

Roared on by their noisy home crowd, Maddington went in front on 22 minutes when Stevens Pino opened the scoring.

In a tight game, the result was still up for grabs until Jose Zuniga made it 2-0 with a fantastic strike, and Phoenix’s hopes were truly extinguished when Samir Ramos added a third near the end.

City are now three points clear of Phoenix having completed a league double over the Bunbury side. But with both sides still having eight matches to play this season, there could still be a few twists and turns ahead.

Third-place Quinns slipped five points behind Maddington following their 2-2 draw at Wembley Downs.

Danny Head gave Quinns the lead on 13 minutes but by half-time they were behind after goals from Daniel Raine and skipper Juraj Galba. Quinns were on course for a damaging loss until Liam Hunt rescued a point in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

While Quinns have a game fewer to play than the teams above them, they still have to play Maddington twice and Phoenix once so should not be ruled out of the title running yet.

Neither should Kwinana United, whose 7-0 thumping of bottom club Hamersley Rovers means they stay nine points off the pace, but they have a game in hand on Maddington and Phoenix and two on Quinns. Lee Bates scored four for Kwinana at Hamersley on Sunday, with Jake Daley (2) and Dominic Sumner getting the others.

Elsewhere, Conor O’Driscoll bagged two as Jaguar FC defeated UWA Nedlands 5-2. Deng Akol, Malek Domkoc and Makuei Mapooth scored Jaguar's others, while Lawrence Lewis and Abel Thomas-Hy got UWA's goals.

Queens Park scored twice in the final eight minutes to earn a 3-3 draw at Leeming Strikers. Leigh Bridger put the visitors in front but by the hour Leeming were 3-1 in front through goals from Michael Jennings, David Palin and Kieran Witt. Queens Park reduced the deficit thanks to Hakim Rezaie’s 82nd minute penalty, then in the final minute Kenny Young grabbed an unlikely equaliser.

North Perth United also left it late as they defeated Joondalup United 3-2. It was 1-1 at half-time, Javier Pineres Mestre’s opener for North Perth cancelled out by Adam Taylor. It stayed all square until six minutes from the end when Kyall Osborne put Joondalup ahead for the first time. Kyran Broadhurst quickly levelled for the home side and a minute into stoppage time David Houston struck the winner.
