Kingsway bring Subi back to earth

Olympic Kingsway put four past Subiaco at Kingsway Reserve to open the Men’s State League Division One with two straight wins.

Olympic hit the ground running with two goals inside the first 19 minutes. Tommy Amphlett netted his second in as many weeks with an improvised effort off the outside of his boot before Dave Perich tapped in from Calum O'Connell's cross.

Goran Stajic's team won 5-0 at Dianella White Eagles last week but were brought back to earth as late goals from Nick Koefler and James Fanelli put gloss on the scoreline.

Fremantle City missed the chance to join Kingsway at the top of Division One as they let slip a lead away to 10-man Mandurah City to draw 1-1.

Both goals came in the second half. Hayden Stevens rose highest from Matt Sparrow's corner to put Fremantle ahead, and their chances of winning were enhanced when Silas Becsi was shown a straight red card on 53 minutes.

But the hosts dug in and earned a share of the points when substitute James Paylor broke down the left and crossed for Craig Barker to stroke home.

Western Knights got their season up and running after a Covid postponement last week as they won 2-1 at Joondalup United.

The visitors were given the upper hand early when Matthew Corrigan was shown a red card and they went on to score twice in the first half through Dylan White and Noah Shamaki.

Joondalup saw Gavin Knight's penalty saved by Sam Stone, although they would strike late on through Andrew Flint.

UWA Nedlands also recorded their first win of the season as they defeated Rockingham City 3-1.

Jason Rule opened the scoring on 14 minutes and UWA seized the initiative further when City's Mitch Firth saw a second yellow card on 40 minutes.

Samuel Moffatt netted immediately after and a penalty from Charles Breen gave UWA a 3-0 lead on the hour.

Taylor Carter pulled one back with 12 minutes left but the visitors have now lost their first two games since relegation from the NPL last season.

Dianella got their first point since promotion to Division One thanks to a 2-2 draw at home to Quinns.

Glen Grostate's visitors went ahead when Jackson Dongray's long throw was flicked on by Adam Buckingham and Ben Hinshelwood bundled in. But Kristian Despotovski levelled when he broke from deep to score stylishly from Harry Blunt's pass.

Hinshelwood would restore Quinns' lead with a looping header from range. Despotovski had the answer once more though with an effort that wrong-footed Caelan Cooper as the game ended all square.

There was one postponement on Saturday afternoon as Forrestfield United's clash with Murdoch University Melville fell victim of Covid cases. The game will be rescheduled to Wednesday April 27.

The game of the day in Division Two came at Wotton Reserve as winners from Round One Morley Windmills and Curtin University played out a seven-goal thriller.

The visitors emerged with the points 4-3 to move top of the league, but they had to work for it despite racing into a three-goal lead.

Daniel Nocciolino and Theodore Chapota both struck inside the first eight minutes and Uni moved into a three-goal lead on 55 minutes through Kieran Witt.

But three goals in 10 minutes turned the game on its head soon after. Tyler Holden, Stephen Musonda and Nikola Zmukic struck to seemingly turn momentum back in the host's favour.

They were only on terms for two minutes though as Oscar Wright netted what proved to be the winner as Troy Reid's side won for a second straight game.

Carramar Shamrock Rovers moved up to six points with Curtin after defeating Joondalup City 4-0.

Jamie Gibson picked up where he left off after six minutes following last week's hat-trick, and City's task became even harder when Daniel Dyson was sent off for a foul which denied a goalscoring opportunity.

Bardsley made it 2-0 from the free-kick, and then he netted another set-piece before half-time, a low left-footed curler around the wall.

Joondalup’s 10 men grew weary as the game wore and Bardsley completed his hat-trick on 64 minutes.

Elsewhere, Kingsley Westside got their first win of the season with a 5-0 defeat of Canning City, who conceded five for a second straight week.

Darren O'Riordan scored inside five minutes and Kieron Salmon doubled the lead before the interval, with more damage done after the break.

Cameron Bishop, Connor Lynch, and Luke Coltman all got on the scoresheet as the hosts moved to four points from two games.

And on a day of plenty of goals, Wanneroo City and Balga shared the points in a 3-3 draw. Bleron Mamudi’s superb free-kick for Balga was the pick of the goals.

South West Phoenix's first home game since earning promotion back to the State League was called off due to Covid cases, as was Swan United's fixture against Gosnells.
