Binnie keeps Phoenix on top

Rory Binnie struck 10 minutes from time to keep South West Phoenix on top after Round 14 of the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division.

Binnie’s goal gave Phoenix a 3-2 win at Wembley Downs after they had trailed 2-1.

It was all-square at the interval, Andrew Blunden giving the visitors the lead while Matthew Devereux levelled for Wembley. Devereux then put the home side ahead with half-an-hour to play, before Ababio Bright levelled four minutes later and Binnie came up with the winner.

Phoenix are on top on goal difference from Maddington White City, who briefly took over the summit when they beat Hamersley Rovers 3-1 on Saturday night. A double from Samir Ramos and one from Jhonatan Barbosa proved decisive, after Rovers had led with Abdul Kamara’s early effort.

Quinns remain third, a point off the pace, following their 2-0 win at Leeming Strikers. Liam Hunt and Ryan McCready scored the goals in the first half.

Kwinana United are fourth, four points behind Quinns but with two matches in hand. On Sunday they won 1-0 at North Perth United through Dominic Sumner’s 12th minute goal.

Two of the bottom three sides enjoyed away wins.

Joondalup United opened a seven-point gap on bottom-of-the-table Hamersley with a 3-1 victory at Jaguar FC. Max Van Raensteyn, Andreas Bouzinekis and Henry Martinez put United in control, while Magai Deng scored Jaguar’s late consolation.

Queens Park now have a 10-point buffer from the basement following their 3-1 win at UWA Nedlands. Leigh Bridger (2) and Lindon Bridger scored for Queens Park, with Walter Torres on target for UWA.
