Become a Referee

Please note that our Level 4 Referee Courses for 2010 have now been completed. Course applications for 2011 will re-open in December. Please do not send in any applications forms and payment details, as they will simply be returned. Please check this page later in the year for further details.

If you've ever had a desire to be the one in the middle with the whistle then here's your chance as Football West is looking for budding referees to officiate men's and women's games at junior, youth, schools and senior levels.

The current process for obtaining accreditation starts with the Level 4 Introductory course. Part One of the course is conducted by correspondence, with participants receiving their workbook, Laws of the Game and a DVD. Once the workbook has been completed and returned for marking, participants will be sent the exam. This course is made for the entire football community, for anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge of the Laws, not just for prospective referees.

To be officially recognised as a referee (receive accreditation) and to receive appointments to games, participants must firstly register as a match official with Football West and then complete Part Two of the course. This is a classroom based course, and takes approximately eight hours to complete. These courses are generally run on a weekend, however they are scheduled to meet most participants' needs.

Once you've passed your Level 4 course, not only can you get paid for each game you officiate but there is a clear career path available to you. Starting with juniors as a cadet referee which includes running the line for senior games, then progressing up through the ranks to the higher levels which includes the A-League, should you wish.

The fee to register for the combined Level 5 & 4 course is $85.00 (payable to Football West).

So if you're at least 13 years old and feel you have what it takes to be a match official please complete and return the registration form below or if you would like some further information, please contact Mathew Cheeseman, Football West's Referee Coordinator, at mathew.cheeseman@footballwest.com.au.

Overseas Referees

If you are moving to Western Australia and have already obtained a referee qualification from overseas, we will require a clearance letter from your local association and then your qualification can be transferred to the Australian equivalent. If you have any queries regarding this process, then please contact Mathew Cheeseman on the email address listed above.
