A preview of this weekend in WA football.

All Flags Major Semi Final

Match of the Week: Bayswater City v Floreat Athena – 2.30pm Saturday

A spot in the 2012 All Flags Grand Final is up for grabs this Saturday afternoon when premiers Bayswater City host league runners-up Floreat Athena in a massive blockbuster at Frank Drago Reserve. The winner will progress straight to the October 6 Grand Final and earn a week off, while the loser will face the winner of the Major Semi Final next weekend. An extra motivating factor is that the Grand Final will be held at Bayswater’s home ground, so they have it all to play for this weekend. City hasn’t played since their Round 22 road trip to Bunbury where they clinched their history-making title, while last weekend saw Athena defeat rivals Sorrento 3-1 in the Qualifying Final. The last time these two sides clashed saw Bayswater smash Athena 6-0, but Chris Barbas’ side will be out for revenge and there will be no bigger scalp than defeating the 2012 premiers on their home soil.

All Flags Minor Semi Final

Match of the Week: Sorrento v Perth SC, Percy Doyle Reserve – 6.00pm Saturday

Match highlights shown on Opens external link in new windowFootball West TV from Monday afternoon

Another blockbuster is on the menu as Saturday night football returns to Percy Doyle Reserve. The league’s best side at home, Sorrento, will host the league’s best team away from home, Perth SC. These two teams have clashed more times than anyone else in recent history, with Sorrento still needing to avenge their 7-0 capitulation in last season’s Grand Final. Perth are hoping to keep their dream of four successive championships alive, but they will have to do it against a Sorrento team which boast the return of skipper Todd Harnwell, Reece Vittiglia, Jason Mirco and Danny Cain for the do-or-die clash. 2011 joint Gold Medal winner Johny Mirco has also announced he will retire at the end of this season, so the Gulls will be hoping to give him a fairytale finish to a fantastic career. Get ready for some fireworks as there are no second chances in this clash!

Round 25 All Flags State League Division One

Match of the Week: Mandurah City v Ashfield, Hyundai Stadium – 3.00pm Saturday

There are several huge clashes with just two rounds remaining in the All Flags State League Division One, but second-placed Mandurah City hosting fourth-placed Ashfield is the biggest. A loss for Mandurah would all but rule them out of the title race, assuming Cockburn City and Wanneroo City win their respective matches. Last weekend saw Mandurah crush the Division Two-bound Forrestfield United 4-1, while Ashfield put five past fellow relegation strugglers Fremantle Spirit.

Round 27 All Flags State League Division Two

Match of the Week: Melville City v UWA-Nedlands, UWA Sports Park – 3.00pm Saturday

There’s just two games left in the regular Football West season and this week will see Melville City take on champions UWA-Nedlands. Melville is listed as the home team, but the match will be played at UWA Sports Park due to Len Shearer Reserve being unavailable. The Rats had the bye last week, while UWA-Nedlands were 2-1 winners over bottom-placed Quinns FC.

Round 21 MySolar Sunday Premier League

Match of the Week: Hamersley Rovers v Kingsley, Carine Open Space – 3.00pm Sunday

Second-placed Hamersley Rovers will host fifth-placed Kingsley this Sunday in the penultimate round of the MySolar Sunday Premier League season. After Joondalup United sealed the title last weekend, the minor placings are up for grabs and the Rovers sit in the box seat to grab the runners-up spot. Last week saw Hamersley thrashed 5-1 by fellow frontrunners BB United, while Kingsley were 3-1 winners away to North Perth United.

Round 20 Bankwest Women’s State Premier League

Match of the Week: Beckenham Angels v East Fremantle, Mills Park No 3 – 1.00pm Sunday

The equation is simple – win and the title is theirs! Beckenham Angels will be looking to make history on Sunday afternoon at home to East Fremantle at Mills Park when they look to win both the match and title for a fantastic finish to the year. A slip-up would mean the title race would be decided in a mouth-watering Round 21 fixture against fierce rivals Northern Redbacks, assuming the Redbacks win their catch-up match with the NTC on Tuesday night. East Fremantle can’t finish any higher than sixth, so will be looking to cause a massive upset after having the bye last weekend. The Angels beat Balcatta 5-0 last Sunday and nothing less than three points will be the aim for this season as they aim to complete the triple after winning the Night Series and reaching the Cup Final which will be played on Sunday 7 October.
