United Maylands Junior Football Club and Gowrie Group Team Up for Harmony Day 2008 -  March 08
On Saturday March 15 as numerous commemorative programs around Perth celebrated Australia’s cultural diversity, the children and families of United Maylands Junior Football Club and The Gowrie’s Refugee Soccer Program got together for a special day of celebration with the world game.
Perth put on a brilliant day of sunshine for the games, football clinics and barbecue and an excellent 150-odd people from various backgrounds started the day, watching and participating in a traditional African drumming session.
After the drumming a series of children’s Football Games were played involving children from both the local United Maylands Club and new-comer’s from the Gowrie’s Refugee Soccer program in the 8s age and 15s age categories and a visit from Forrestfield United Soccer Club for the 11s age group.
As children came away from their games they were met with a special surprise clinic put on by Perth Glory. Glory players Tando Velaphi and Nikita Rukavytsya, two of WA’s best talented young players also from culturally diverse backgrounds were days out from attending a tournament in Singapore to represent Australia, but made a great effort with the help of Glory’s Dan Israel to put on a great ball juggling and goal-shooting and goalkeeping exhibition with some fun skills clinics for the players.
At the end of the event the participants shared in an Aussie-style barbeque as they rested from an eventful outing, reflecting on a harmonious day of football, fun, socializing in harmony and a little touch of Glory.

United Maylands Junior Football Club Celebrates First Year of Community Program - February 08

United Maylands Junior Football Club recently commemorated the first year of its great community work with the world game under the Football West Outreach for Diversity (OFD) Program.

The Open Day event made possible with support from Football West and Smarter than Smoking showed a snapshot of the work the Club and the OFD program do in breaking down barriers and presenting opportunities to families from refugee and emerging community backgrounds, while aiding integration into Australian society with the good health messages of Smarter than Smoking.

Leith Miele from Smarter than Smoking, Football West’s Chairman Kevin Campbell, Development Manager Andrew Bettell, Development Assistant Lea Stinton and Outreach Program coordinator Gordon Duus were among those in attendance as were City of Bayswater East Ward Councillors Sylvan Albert and Sonia Turkington with the 80-strong crowd indulging in a cross-section of a traditional Australian barbecue and traditional African cuisine and hospitality afterwards.

Councillor Turkington noted, “It was a pleasure to be there on Saturday and see how new communities group together to assist the youth in a worthwhile sport activity and with such enthusiasm.  I wish them all well as they seem particularly talented.”

The event saw awards presented to the small but dedicated group of Club volunteer Coaches, Committee Members and players rewarded for outstanding achievement. Players Yosef Asefa and Deng Majok took joint honours in the 14s Best and Fairest while Yetimgeta Mulgeta took out the 11s team Best and Fairest and Kirubael Abebe took out the Rising Star Award.  Special mention was made of Yosef Asefa, 14 of Maylands, who was part of the WA 14s state team that participated in the National Talent Championships in October 2007 and continues his elite training as well as being part of the Outreach Program. And his advice for other players who want to do well: “Listen to your Coaches and your elders and keep trying your hardest to get what you want.”
