Monday, 21 July 2008
State governing body Football West have today announced the resurrection of the Western Australian State Men’s Amateur team after an absence of more than five years.

The decision to bring back the state side will give over 5000 amateur players the opportunity to pull on their state’s colours’ and comes on the heels of the return of the semi professional state team in June of this year who traveled to Indonesia to take on the East Java 23’s.

Football West board member Rob MacKay says the decision to reinstate the amateur state side shows the commitment the governing body has to the thousands of Sunday league players in the state.

“Football West are highly committed to the development of the amateur game in this state and we hope that the return of the state side will give our best players in these leagues something to aspire to” he said.

“There is bound to be massive excitement and interest in the team after such a long period of absence as we move into the second half of the season.”

“With the high standard of games we have seen this season, positions in the squad will be highly sought after and extremely competitive.”

Football West will now call for expressions of interest for a suitably qualified coach to be appointed. Further details regarding squad selection criteria and matches will be announced in due course.
