The Football West under 17 WA State girls side has suffered a heart-breaking extra time 2-0 loss to Queensland in the final of the FFA National Youth Championships at Coffs Harbour on Saturday.
With the scores locked at 0-0 after the regulation 70 minutes of normal time, Queensland secured the title with two strikes in extra time thanks to goals from Foote and McKeen.
WA had chances to win the match in the first 70 but couldn’t find a way past the resolute Queensland defence. The girls tired significantly in extra time as Queensland lifted to claim the title.
Football West Education and Development Manager Andrew Bettell believes Western Australia should be proud of the girls efforts amongst some stiff opposition from the Eastern states.
“The improvement in the girls’ game in the West has been exceptional over the last few years and our teams travel to the Nationals each year as a credible threat” he said.
“For a State of our size to be competing at semi final level and above is an outstanding achievement and my congratulations go to all of those involved.”
