Round 11 Preview - State Premier League supported by PowerPlay Sports & the Sunday Times PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 July 2008
The Football West State Premier League supported by PowerPlay Sports & the Sunday Times moves into the half way point of the season in what will be a crucial round of matches for a number of clubs.

Incredibly, only five points separate first to ninth on the league table, meaning the teams who can record three points this weekend can establish a mini break over their rivals.

The Match of the Week takes us to Dalmatinac Park where Cockburn City host Mandurah City in what promises to be a mouth watering contest with both sides in the top four. The Cockerels are only off top spot on goal difference and have the opportunity to bounce back from their 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Sorrento in the last round. Johny Mirco is the club’s leading scorer with eight strikes and the WA State team player will be the key man to stop if Mandurah are to get anything from the game.

The Peel side has surprised everyone but themselves so far this season with some impressive performances. Andy Brown is the enforcer in the middle of the park and will be the key to City’s chances, whilst up front top marksman Phil O’Callaghan will be looking to build on his 11 goals so far this season

League leaders Sorrento welcome the inconsistent Swan IC to Percy Doyle reserve knowing that three points at home are vital to maintain their assault on the league title. The Gulls have the potential to put Swan to the sword, however if the Francis Street side turn up on song, this could be an entertaining clash with plenty of goals.

ECU Joondalup will make the trip down to Litis Staidum for their clash with Floreat Athena in what promises to be a titanic tussle. Both sides are locked on 16 points and while still within striking range of the top sides, will not want to drop points and concede further ground. ECU striker Ian McMurray will be the man to watch, with the big striker coming off a bag of goals last week which takes his tally for the season to 10.

Soccer Pools Cup semi finalists Western Knights will entertain Graham Normanton’s Perth SC at Nash Field. The Knights are coming off a 3-2 victory over cellar dweller Armadale last weekend but will find the going tougher this week against a Perth side that will go all out to claim the three points to close the gap to the top of the league. Twin strike pair Andreas Oliveira and David Onoforo have found form and will be tough to stop on the small Nash Field pitch and will be keen to avenge their 0-3 Soccer Pools cup defeat at home to the Knights a fortnight ago.

High flying Inglewood United, currently in third position, welcome Fremantle to the Clipsal Stadium with the home side looking to condemn the visitors to another loss, whilst at the same time keeping themselves at the top end of the table. Fremantle are rooted to the bottom of the Football West State Premier League and unless their form takes a turn for the better soon, will find themselves struggling for survival come season’s end.

Stirling Lions will face a tough test against a resurgent Armadale at Macedonia Park, with Brad Hassell’s men finding some form in recent weeks. Many observers believe they were unlucky to leave empty handed from their most recent outing, a 3-2 defeat to Western Knights and with their recent signing James Robinson combining with the return of Gary Faria, they could prove a handful for the Lions rear guard.

All matches to be played Saturday at 3.00pm. Get down to your local ground to watch the goals fly in the Football West State Premier League.
