The Draw for the semi finals of the State League Soccer Pools Cup will be held live on Radio 6PR’s Sport Central programme tonight as the last four teams vie for the chance to get their hands on the trophy.
The Soccer Pools Cup has come down to the final four with surprise package Hamersley Rovers, from the Amateur Premier league, still in the running along with Sorrento, Western Knights and ECU Joondalup in what promises to be two matches that will contain all of the romance that similar Cup competitions are known for.
Football West CEO Garry Chandler believes the decision to reinstate Western Australia’s top Amateur clubs has been vindicated with Hamersley’s progression to the semi final stage.
“The decision to include our top Amateur Premier clubs in the Soccer Pools Cup this season has been validated by Hamersley Rovers great efforts in reaching the semi final stage. With Premier League giants ECU Joondalup, 2006 Premier League winners Sorrento, and Western Knights still in the mix, it’ll be a big ask to expect Hamersley to progress to the finals, but that’s the beauty and unpredictability of the Cup.”
Whilst all of the attention will be on Hamersley, after they dumped out Fremantle in the Quarter Finals, three of the Premier League’s big guns are still vying to take their place in the showpiece finale to the 2008 season.
Western Knights will look to put some indifferent league form behind them as they bid to win only their second Soccer Pools Cup after their last triumph in 2000, when they defeated fellow semi finalist Sorrento in the final. That was the closest the Gulls have come to winning the Cup, and followed another final loss in 1996 and is something that coach Steve Neville will be hoping to rectify with the young and talented squad at his disposal.
Of all the sides in the draw ECU Joondalup were the last of the sides to have lifted the trophy with their most recent success coming in 2002. The ECU side has been threatening to break their recent trophy drought since then and the 2008 Soccer Pools Cup provides them with the perfect opportunity.
Tune in tonight to Sports Central on Radio 6PR at approximately 7.45pm as host Peter Vlahos is joined by Football West CEO Garry Chandler to announce the draw for the 2008 State League Soccer Pools Cup Semi Finals.
