WOMENS SMARTER THAN SMOKING CUP ROUND 3
The big players are easing their way through the matchups with Top two Premier teams Queens Park and Northern Redbacks and Division 1’s top two Subiaco and Balcatta making it through. Ballajura are the only Division Two side left and have a tough encounter in the Quarterfinals.
Wrap of results:
Third Divisions fourth placed Maccabi was pushed aside by Second Division Ballajura 3-0, despite their tight defensive record of only 14 goals against. Maccabi were lucky enough to pull two byes to advance to the third round. Ballajura advanced though the second round with a 7-1 win against Sixth Division Perth Royals.
First Division’s second placed Balcatta B worked hard to put a goal away against a committed sixth placed Second Division Wembley. Final score 1-0. While Balcatta A, playing straight after their B side at Grindleford Reserve, disposed of The Jacks with a 12-0 pasting, 8 in the first half. Dynamo Jamie Carley scoring a hatrick. Lisa Tana obviously had words and the team changed style to play with more possession and less haste in the second half. It became heated and both sides had a player sent off midway through the half. Former Queens Park player Alloryce Keswell and Amanda Tana easily controlled the Balcatta defence while Laura Turnbull and Jamie Carley controlled the midfield. The Jacks are sitting mid table in the First Division, only 3 points and a few goals outside of the top four and off league leaders Subiaco B.
Subiaco United B top the First Division table only by goal difference to Balcatta B. Subiaco’s win against Division 1’s Noranda, at only 2-0, was enough to put them in one of the match ups of the Quarterfinals.
Northern Redbacks A are sitting very comfortably on top of the Premier Table. No quarter was given to a lowly placed Division 1 side, East Fremantle B, in their 9 nil drubbing. Rebecca Davies, sitting third on the leading goalscorers tally, scored 4 in the mix. Despite a catch up game on the books, the Reds have 30 goals for and only 10 against in their 8 games played.
All Premier matchups this round:
Subiaco A defeated second from bottom Beckenham 2-1 in a tight contest where their young side failed to put away opportunites created. Subiaco Coach Michele Matthews was more than happy as the team is having a bad run of injuries.
Mandurah were outplayed by a dominant Queens Park 2-0. Leading goal scorer, Stacey Learmont and young Sam Sparkey scored for Queens Park in blustery conditions at the Hyundai Stadium. The girls travelled to Mandurah together by bus to help celebrate Coach Steve Woodfin’s 53rd Birthday.
Nedlands and Cockburn were more evenly matched this week in very mild conditions on the foreshore. After Jane Bennett turned smoothly off her defender to score inside of 1 minute for Nedlands, another silly defensive error cost Nedlands a draw in normal time. Penalties saw Nedlands keeper Penny TannerHoath step up to take a penalty after giving Cockburn a hand when the referee was unsure if the ball was over the line. TannerHoath scored then saved to help put Nedlands through to the next round against Premier Toppers Northern Redbacks.
