This weekend sees the quarter finals of the Soccer Pools Cup. Will we see the romance of the longest domestic football competition, the FA Cup, come to the Soccer Pools Cup?
The only remaining amateur team in the competition is Hamersley Rovers who are at home to bottom of the Premier League Fremantle City at Kingsway Reserve. An upset is not out of the question. Hamersley have already accounted for Bayswater City and will no doubt be out to claim another Saturday league scalp. This will be no easy tie for Fremantle who need to bounce back from their loss to Armadale in the league last week that put them in last place in the league; some would say sweet revenge for Armadale who Fremantle dumped out of the Cup with an injury time penalty in the last round.
Forrestfield United are the only first division side left in the Cup and they travel to Percy Doyle Reserve to take on Sorrento. Forrestfield are a young side, and there is no doubt that this game will be a big test for them. Sorrento are beginning to gel and have only lost at home once this season and have been hitting the back of the net in their home fixtures with alarming regularity, and following Scott Bulloch’s form on Wednesday night for the WA state side, it would be a brave man to bet against a home win for the Gulls.
The other two ties see Premier sides going head to head. ECU Joondalup who knocked out cup holders Stirling Lions in the last round play host to Floreat Athena. Tommy Amphlett has been a source of much of Joondalup’s attacking flair this season, but his withdrawal from the State team on Wednesday night puts a question mark over his fitness, which would be a major blow for Joondalup. Ian Mc Murray has been in good form up front for Joondalup, and turned in an impressive display for the state team, and his job will be made a little easier with Floreat missing Ante Kovacevic in the heart of their defence, as well as regular ‘keeper Vujacic being unavailable. However Michael Roki’s team will be no pushover and this could be an intriguing duel.
The final fixture will see brothers going head to head as Perth SC play host to the Western Knights at Dorrien Gardens. Andrija Jukic left the Western Knights at the start of the season and will come face to face with his brother Luka who remained at the Mosman Park based club. Neither team has performed to the high standards set by their coachs this season, but Perth has the firepower to cause the Knights a few problems not only upfront but in midfield too. Oliveras and Onoforo will have to be marshaled closely by the Knights defence, which looks less brittle with the return of David Annall. It is however in the midfield where one expects the game to be won or lost. Howarth, Naglieri and Jukic will be up against the Micevski brothers, David and Daniel and Luka Jukic. This will not be a battle for the faint hearted, and will no doubt determine the end result.
All games kick off at 2.30pm to allow for extra time should the scores be level at full time.
