SMARTER THAN SMOKING WOMENS ROUND 7

A Sunday where all the top teams exerted their dominance over lower table teams.

East Fremantle v Northern Redbacks

Northern Redbacks Coach Tim Hodgson is happy with another win as his team played their usual passing game and came away with a 3 nil win away from home.

15 year old R. Davies was brought down from behind in the box and was awarded a penalty.  Davies stepped up to claim the spot kick and the Reds first goal inside the first half.

East Fremantle responded to Tony Carvajals half time talk by dominating the play after half time but simply couldn’t put the ball in the net.
Nicola Williams chalked up the second for the Reds and Steph Grant scored a long range shot through a crowded penalty box.  The keeper unsighted couldn’t be blamed for the sealing goal.

East Fremantles K.Jukic was sent off for a two footed tackle on Carys Hawkins 5 minutes from the end, but the game was already over.

The Reds have a game in hand but are still the team to beat at the top of the table. They have yet to play second placed Queens Park as their second round fixture was postponed due to both teams having state camp commitments.

Nedlands v UWA

It was a one sided affair between third placed UWA and 9th placed Nedlands. The top two teams are only a breath away from UWA, all 3 teams having played 6 games of the 7 rounds. UWA have scored 12 goals to Queens Parks 21 and the Reds 26.

There was no lack of effort from Nedlands, with each player giving 100% for the entire match. Katy Rutter has been a stalwart with the Nedlands midfield being run off their legs the last few weeks. Nedlands battled hard for possession but wasted their opportunities with missed shots and dispossession in front of the goal. Coach John Warrington is sure not to miss the two glaring things the team is in need of, being scoring goals and leadership on the park. Otherwise the squad have been steady improvers, conceding less goals than mid table Mandurah.

UWA looked far sharper in posession and went into the break 6-0 up.

Nedlands conceded yet another penalty this week via a handball which was put tidly beyond TannerHoaths reach into the top corner of the goal by M.Kolker.

It was not all one way traffic as Nedlands pacey striker Ash Harling broke through on a couple of occasions with the help of balls from Sarah Freedman and Nat Spyvee only for the chances to go amiss.

Kolker and Simmons played a large part of UWA’s success by laying some terrefic balls into spaces between the defense and across the face of the goal which was keeping the Nedlands defense facing their own goals.

Michelle Kent’s quiet achievements at full back are the surprise inspiration for Nedlands at this level.  Kent tidies up her fair share of through balls and as second defender stops as much forward momentum for the opposition as TannerHoath in the goals.

UWA were able to put 3 more away before the end of the game and finished comfortable winners 9-0.

Nikki Brown scored a hatrick, Magalie Kolker and Frankie Simmons scored 2 a piece whilst Lynne McGowan and Jana-Lee Moss scored a goal each for UWA.

Wrap of other games:
Mandurah Coach Jason Washington King is over the moon with drawing last years Champions Balcatta 0-0.  Balcatta are hovering in the lower part of the table with 2 games still in hand and some losses notched in their belts.  Mandurah pushed forward on numerous counter attacks with misses chances and Balcatta’s passing game resulting in Sara King denying them with some terrefic saves.  A deserved result from two contrasting styles of play.

Beckenham took advantage of an understrength Queens Park by countering their strong  play but couldn’t make more than a handful of clear shots on goal.  A penalty and scrappy play reflected a waterlogged pitch. Sam Sparks scored the first, Claire Dunn the second and Stacey Learmont scored 2 for Queens Park to Beckenhams 1. Queens Park continue their movement up the table towards the top position with 1 game in hand.

Subiaco are steady in their progress under Coach Michele Matthews and are sitting fourth in the table.  Cockburn need some inspiration after another loss, this time 6 nil to Subiaco.

Full results round 7:
Balcatta 0 Mandurah 0, Subiaco 6 Cockburn 0, East Fremantle 0 Northern Redbacks 3, Nedlands 0 UWA 9, Beckenham 1 Queens Park 4

Next weeks games to watch out for:

Queens Park play Balcatta at Coker Park.  2007 Champions play the runners up. Queens Park via Stacey Woodfin have been in sintillating form and have to be the favourites by sheer consistency.

Mandurah play Subiaco at the Hyundai Stadium Mandurah at 1pm. This is a challenge for the fourth spot.  Both teams have similar goals for but Mandurah will have to shore up their defence to earn their points here.
