Soccer Pools Cup – Round Two Preview Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 May 2008
The Soccer Pools Cup second round takes centre stage this weekend with a number of intriguing games over the weekend with the Football West Match of the round taking place at Percy Doyle Reserve where Premier league leaders Sorrento host first division leaders Wanneroo City (3pm).

Both northern suburb clubs head into the game undefeated in the league and will be hoping to continue that on Saturday. Gulls Coach Steve Neville believes it will be a good local derby. “We’re looking forward to the game, and it will be a tough, they have started their season as well as we have so we can’t take them lightly,” said Neville.

“We are unbeaten in the league but we haven’t actually dominated games, but we’ve raised the bar in certain games for 20 – 30 minutes and played some excellent football and killed teams off. With the new boy’s coming in it takes time to adjust to our style of football but there is still room for improvement,” added Neville.

Sorrento heads into the clash without four players who are suspended, keeper Neil Young, defender Michael Ord, midfielder James Morgan and striker Stuart Montgomery. But with Steve McDonald outstanding at the back, and Steve Neville and Scott Bulloch on the flanks the Gulls hope to have enough firepower to make it though to round three.

It’s been a great start for the Roos in division one and new coach Gerry McEwan is looking forward to his young side pitting their wits with the Premier league leaders. “It’s a big game for the players, the biggest rivals we have up here is ECU Joondalup with players coming and going from  the two clubs, including my self. But we’ve got six ex Sorrento players and they are really looking forward to the game,” said McEwan.

“It’s a big bonus for our club to play in the second round of the cup but it’s not a priority, our aim is to get back in the Premier League and we have a few players with niggling injuries and we may have to rest them on Saturday, which will mean a young side on the pitch,” added McEwan.

Roos striker Brian Cairney has been in rich goal scoring form with five goals in the league so far this season and he will hope to add to this on the weekend. Skipper Brad McDonald has been in superb form in the middle of the park, along with Rowdy Yates, and his leadership in a young side has been an added bonus for McEwan’s side.

It’s an all Premier League encounter at Macedonia Park, when reigning cup winners Stirling Lions host E.C.U. Joondalup. (3pm)

The Lions are looking for a hat-trick of cup final victories, and head into the game following a 2-0 home win against Floreat Athena last week. Mark Redshaw has been a revelation since joining Michael Lyons side last month, and he will hope to add to his four goals in his three games. The midfield partnership of Steve Porter and Marc Anthony has added a new dimension to the Lions offensively and with Phil Straker in superb form the Lions will head into the game full of confidence.

E.C.U. themselves are full of confidence, and are coming off a 5-0 away victory against Fremantle Spirit. Craig Young returned to the starting line up last week and scored twice and with John Thornley looking to get back into the starting line up after suspension, Willie McNally will have a few selection headaches before the game. At the back Craig Simpson has been in superb form along with Scott Blackmore and the pair will need to be on their toes on Saturday against a potent Lions strike force.

Another all Premier league clash takes place at the E&D Litis Stadium when Mandurah City visits Floreat Athena. (3pm)

The surprise package of the season to date has been Mandurah the newly promoted side have impressed in the opening five rounds and it included a 2-1 home victory against Athena in the league in the opening round. Stuart Currie has brought in some good signing to the club and they have gelled well with the young players already at the club. Ryan Townsend has been a rock at the back along with Chris Currie, and Keith and Andy Brown has added stability to the line up in the middle of the park.

It’s been an indifferent start to the season for Michael Roki’s side, but a good cup run will give them some much needed confidence. Athena lost 0-2 at the Lions last time out but with new recruit Brad Scott settling in well since his move from New Zealand they will hope for a better result on Saturday. Raphael Insuralde has been in good form in the midfield with Adam Bachiller, while at the back Ante Kovacevic and Julian Madaschi have been good, they will need to continue that on Saturday.

The two bottom sides in the Premier League meet at Dalmatinac Park when Fremantle Spirit hosts Armadale. (3pm)

Both sides are still looking for their first points of the season so a win for either would give their season a boast. Spirit is coming off a 0-5 home loss to ECU Joondalup last week, but if they had taken their early chances the score line could have been different, Jason Barerra continues to impress in midfield for Mark Wingell’s side along with Ben Kelly. Callum Roberts has toiled hard up front for the Spirit, while at the back Cisco Jorquiera and Simon Elton-Bott will need to support young keeper Dane McBride.

Armadale have been hit by injuries over the past month and will hope to have a number return sooner rather than later. Scott Devine has led by example in the midfield along with Marlon Ramirez while at the back Shannon Dally, Daryl Platten and Matt Bennion have been outstanding with Cyril Sharrock between the sticks. Reds Coach Brad Hassell will hope Dally is fit along with former Spirit defender Mark Darby and Oliver Hilton who all missed last week’s 0-2 defeat against Perth SC.

There is another all Premier League clash at  the BGC Stadium – Dorrien Gardens where Perth SC entertain Inglewood United (3pm)

Lee Bamber’s side draw 1-1 with Cockburn city last week with Bobby Despotovski again a stand out. The former Glory striker has been in tremendous form along with midfielders Jason Colli and Kevin Griffiths. At the back Shane Pryce and Daniel Kovacevic have formed a great partnership along with youngsters James Duncan and Matt Wardle, while keeper Oliver Taseski continues to impress.

Perth won 2-0 on the road last week at Armadale, their first away from home this season. Their home form has been great and they will hope to continue their 100% record. They will be without Robbie Puca who was injured against Fremantle Spirit but Graham Normanton will hope to have Michael lcanovski, Todd Howarth and Brendan Ross available after all missed last week. The form of Matt Danskin, who has been playing out of position, has been in good form along with David Price in midfield.

In other games Western Knights travels to Wotton Reserve to take on first division outfit Morley Windmills, the Knights haven’t been in good form in the league and Tom Kilkelly’s side will fancy their chances to cause an upset.
Meanwhile amateur sides Hamersley Rovers and Southern Spirit will hope for a place in the third round after ties against first division sides. Rovers take on Bayswater City at Carne Open Space and City’s Coach Michael Di Fulvio is expecting a tough game.

“It’s a difficult challenge for us on Saturday; they are a good side and have been performing well. We can’t take them lightly we need to be on our game and if we are we will get the result,” said Di Fulvio.

Spirit host John Hunter’s Forrestfield United at Watson’s Reserve, and will look for a repeat of their first round win against Queens Park on Saturday.
