On Friday, 2 May at Wauhop Park, East Fremantle the four Regional Glory Girls Cup Champions, Warnbro, Currambine, Phoenix and Leeming played in the finals of the Glory Girls Cup to become the State Champions.
In perfect conditions for football, Warnbro was drawn to play Currambine and Phoenix was drawn to play Leeming in their respective semi-finals. Warnbro took an early to goal lead with Currambine scoring just before half time to make the second half an interesting affair. Warnbro held on to win 2-1 and reached the grand final.
In the other semi-final, Phoenix took the lead half way into the first half but Leeming lifted their efforts resulting in them scoring two great goals to defeat a gallant Phoenix 2-1 to reach the grand final and play Warnbro.
The standard of play was very high throughout the semi-finals with all teams keeping their supporters excited and on edge. The sportsmanship displayed by all the girls is to be commended.
The Grand Final, which was played under lights, was no exception in regards to quality with some excellent passages of play, intermingled with periods of intense pressure where both teams had to defend desperately to keep the opposition out.
Warnbro scored two excellent goals, one from a free kick early in the game and a sensational goal, by the Grand final MVP, Emma Mitchell, that went into the top left hand corner. Warnbro ended the first half two goals up but Leeming’s never-say-die attitude saw them get a goal back and put the pressure back on Warnbro. Both teams jostled for ascendancy for the remaining time with no change to the score of 2-1. The School Sport WA Glory Girls Cup State Champions for 2008 were Warnbro Primary School.
