Five premier players had to make a huge mental and phsyical step up from the State Camp including training and a game to play another 90 minutes for East Fremantle in their regular fixture. E. Draine, C. Walmsley, A.Keissler, T.Hubert and R.Rendell all trialled with the 15s and 17s squads over the weekend for places in respective state teams. Plus K.Spanos from Division 1 stepped up from the camp into the Premier game. The camp finished with a 90 minute game and asked the girls to dig deep into their reserves.
Coach Tony Carvajal’s surprise meant he also had to dig deep mentally to deal with player fatigue and this weeks tough opposition Subiaco. Knowing that Subiaco had drawn last week with League Runners Up Queens Park, Carvajal had to rethink his game plan. The entire team responded to the pressure by taking the game by the throat.
After only a short period of settling in, the game became highly intensive and very physical. The home team were more focussed and dominant, displaying a crisp passing style and forcing Subiaco into their own half for much of the time. Latasha Kirton was in charge with usual Subiaco Coach Michelle Matthews absent for 2 weeks.
Finally with East Freo swarming forward and dominating possesion, Katarina Jukic found the back of the net during a clever team play shortly before half time to make it 1-0 to East Fremantle.
With an average age of 17, energy levels remained high and play passionate, well into the second half. The home team finally started to show some predictable fatigue. A lapse in defensive concentration allowed Subiaco’s Brooke Tielmans to supply a dangerous cross that was volleyed in sweetly by Jennifer Chandler to equalise 1-1.
This spurred East Freo into their second wind - leading to some heated action. Both teams were very lucky not to see yellow at several points as the possession see-sawed.
With about a quarter of the game to go a well worked team move from the corner across the face of goal at a narrow angle saw Katarina Jukic slot her winning second goal home with a reflex touch.
Although Subiaco played an inspired game at times, the home team worked as a passionate gutsy unit with no single player standing out above another.
OTHER RESULTS Northern Redbacks postponed their fixture against Queens Park with 4 players at the same State Camp. Nicola Williams (State Coach) is a playing part of the Redbacks squad. Nedlands also postponed with a number of players injured and sick and unable to field a full 11 against Balcatta. Mandurah excelled with a 3-1 win over Beckenham. M.Spillman’s silky skills for Mandurah looking like she may shape up to be a top goal scorer for the team. They find themselves at the top of the table being the only team with 2 wins.
