Sorrento had the earlier possession in the opening exchanges but neither keeper were troubled and there were very few shots at goal in a very quiet opening half hour.

Sorrento then went ahead after 31 mins with afree kick on the right. Stuart Banks hit a beautiful left footed strike around the wall in to the bottom left hand corner just evading the keeper's dive. That was the highlight of the first half with the majority of the play in the midfield and no further attacking threat from either side.

Sorrento’s Danny Hill got sent off early on in the second half for retaliation after a crunching tackle. Fremantle dominated possession with the extra man advantage but didn’t trouble Neil Young in the Sorrento goal. Adam Bolton coming closest to scoring but Fremantle could not capitalize.

The best move of the game then gave Sorrento a Two Nil lead, the move started from Young in goal, working through the midfield with Lewis Flat who knocked the ball out to Montgomery of the right wing whose lofted pass over the defensive line was meant by Glen Thomas who lobbed the keeper superbly from just outside the area.

Fremantle rallied and put themselves back in with a chance scoring from a left wing cross from their star midfielder Francisco Jorquera which was met by Callum Roberts with a precise far post header back across Neil Young.

The goal gave Fremantle the incentive to try to equalize with Roberts coming close being thwarted by Young. With lots of possession down the flanks Fremantle looked like they would get the equalizer but the Sorrento home defence held firm.

With 12 mins to go Scott Bulloch won the ball in midfield and went straight down the pitch and let rip with a left foot bullet from outside the area which was too hot for the Fremantle keeper who could only block into the path of Montgomery whose predatory  instincts killed the game off to Sorrento a great start to the 2008 season.
