Armadale and Mandurah fight it to a draw PDF Print E-mail

Armadale and Mandurah have fought out a goalless draw in their Round 3 Group A McInerney Ford Night Series match at Litis Stadium on Saturday night.

With the sun still shining brightly after the early kick off, it was Mandurah who threatened first after a long throw from the right was flicked on by Christian Paschkewitz but there was no one on hand to divert the ball home from close range.

Armadale looked to respond immediately as Goodwin stooped to head a foot wide before a speculative long range rising shot from Darryl Platten was easily saved by Green.

It was a game of few clear cut opportunities with neither side finding the killer final ball to unlock the oppositions defence and both also guilty of squandering possession when going forward.

Both coaches made changes at half time in a bid to liven up proceedings and within eight minutes of the restart a long free kick into the box fell to Brown who fizzed his effort across the six yard area and away to safety with nobody able to get a touch.

Another flowing move from City moments later saw substitute Attril and Wylie link up well with the latter’s 20 yard effort deflected wide for a corner with the resulting flag kick being saved on the line following a Matthews header.

Brown found himself with another half chance just inside the area but lashed his shot the wrong side of the post as Armadale threatened to crack under the attacking City pressure.

On 72 minutes City had a free kick 22 yards from goal which Bright smashed past the wall with the late swerve forcing Cyril Sharrock into an important block.

City defender Townsend decided to attempt some magic as he set off on a barnstorming run from inside his own half, beating two men into the box before pulling back to Attril whose flicked effort was blocked by Sharrock and then cleared off the line as both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Armadale coach Brad Hassell missed a number of senior players from his lineup as his young guns faded alarmingly in the second half.

“We only had a couple of players on the bench, we had five or six players out who called up at the last minute and couldn’t play.  We just had to dig in, keep players on the field we normally would have taken off and just had to fight for it in the end” said Hassell.

“We tried to man up in midfield which I thought we did quite well, to our credit I think they just tried to play the ball over the top and we were able to man up which we did really well. Armadale have been renowned for a bit of long ball and fight for everything but we’re trying to play football and it’s slowly coming together” he said.

Mandurah City Assistant Ron Harrison was disappointed to not take maximum points from a clash that the southerners were on top for the majority of the 90 minutes.“I thought we played generally quite well today, better shape and discipline and probably had the better chances throughout the game” said City assistant Harrison.

“If we don’t score, we are not going to win a game. That’s the thing we’ve got to work on next but obviously if you concede goals then your going to lose more games then your going to win but at the end of the day you’ve got to start scoring so we will take the draw and move on” he said.
