  •  Smarter than Smoking - Partner in Community CaLD initiatives

Smarter than Smoking and Football West teamed up in late 2006 to develop a pilot football program aimed at providing football opportunities for special-needs children and people from multicultural backgrounds, particularly young indigenous players and immigrants. Other Partners such as WA Police and very recently Perth Glory have teamed up with Football West to provide initiatives that score goals for social cohesion and encourage people from emerging community backgrounds to become involved in mainstream sport as players, coaches, referees and officials.

The Smarter than Smoking partnership highlights the association between sporting success and a smoke free lifestyle.

Smarter than SMokingLeith Mete from the Heart Foundation said that it is vital that young people continue to be exposed to message that prevents the uptake of smoking, especially as they make the transition from primary to high school - a time when they are at the greatest risk of experimenting.

"For those who desire to perform well with their football, smoking is not a smart move. Smokers are more easily exhausted, are slower to react and have poorer visual judgment. This program provides us with the ability to teach those less fortunate the Smarter than Smoking message," said Leith Mete.

  • Equipment Donations Program

The Football West Equipment Donations Program is an initiative involving the entire Western Australian

football community which passes outdated, redundant and replaced equipment on from Football

West, mainstream football clubs and individuals in the football community to our sub-grassroots

programs which provide new opportunities for disadvantaged groups and attract people into

mainstream sport through our affiliate Football Clubs.

In the Outreach for Diversity Program, United Maylands Junior Football Club and the award and

accolade winning Multicultural Friendship Games (aka ‘Footy with the Fuzz') have benefited greatly.

With the Indigenous Football Program in full swing bringing new sporting opportunities to

enthusiastic youngsters around the state and the Equal-Footingball Program (football for people

with disabilities) set to commence shortly there has never been greater purpose to renew and

recycle club gear!

The WA Paralympic Football Program (catering for people with specific mobility disabilities) has recently

benefited from a small donation of balls, a pump, markers, bibs and pop-up goals.

We encourage more clubs, groups and individuals to consider what redundant, outdated and

replaced equipment they can spare for the program and to contact Football West through 9422

6901 or email at gordond@footballwest.com.au to arrange drop off or arrange for a pick-up.
