A goal three minutes from time from Bayswater City substitute Mundy Toure has given the Frank Drago Reserve side a 2-1 win against Stirling Lions at Macedonia Park on Sunday evening.
The win gave City a place in next week's quarter-finals where they will take on UWA-Nedlands, at 6PR Stadium.
New striker Gustavo Catercione gave City a perfect start, scoring midway through the first half; the Paul McCarthy also missed a penalty to let the Lions back in the game. Phil O'Callaghan converted his spot kick in the second half, before Toure sealed the win late on.
It was the Lions, who opened the better and Matty Barlow shot on five minutes, went into the side netting, after good approach work from Jamie De Abreu, and moments later O'Callaghan shot from 18-yards was straight at Tom Dixon.
Bayswater hit back and on 16 minutes Ross Cosgrove's in-swinging corner fell to Paddy Quinn, the midfielders shot from 10-yards was only parried by Cory Hugo, and Jason Gavin cleared the rebound.
The deadlock was finally broken on 25 minutes. John Kearney's ball out of defence sent Cisco Jorquera clear down the left, his cross picked out Catarcione, who finished clinically past Hugo from eight-yards.
They had the opportunity to double their lead five minutes later. Toure's run into the penalty area was stopped by a tackle by Matt Harold, and referee Michal Jasinski had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. McCarthy stepped up, but luckily for the Lions his shot rebounded off the crossbar and way to safety.
Bayswater continued to take the game to the Lions and Jorquera shot drifted inches past the post on 40 minutes, and moments later Catarcione found space in the penalty area but fired straight at Hugo, when well placed.
The Lions ended the half better and had the ball in the net on 45 minutes, but Barlow was in an offside position when he fired home Gareth McGlynn's cut back. Then in stoppage-time they went close again. O'Callaghan and Barlow combined to set up Paul Lloyd, but the former Armadale midfielder saw his shot whistle inches past the far post.
It was Bayswater, who opened the brighter in the second half, and three minutes in a quick free kick by Kearney caught the Lions napping, and from Paul McCarthy's cross Jorquera headed wide at the back post.
It was an entertaining game with chances at both ends. O'Callaghan should have done better for the Lions on the hour, after being found by De Abreu, but the striker missed from close-range. While two minutes later Catarcione played a great ball into the path of City substitute Toure, but he fired wide, with just Hugo to beat.
Craig Robson's free kick on the edge of the penalty area on 64 minutes was well saved by Dixon at full stretch, but five minutes later they did find the equaliser. Barlow found space down the left of the penalty area and his powerful shot hit the arm of Kearney, and referee Jasinski pointed straight to the spot. O'Callaghan kept his nerve and fired home the spot kick to level things up.
Bayswater knew a draw wasn't enough and went for the win. First on 85 minutes Toure played in Catarcione, down the left, he held off Robson but fired just over the bar from 12-yards.But two minutes the pair were involved in the winning goal. This time Toure and Catarcione played a neat one-two on the edge of the penalty area, and Toure kept his composure to finish low past Hugo, much to the delight of the Bayswater faithful.
It was now the turn of the Lions to press and on 89 minutes De Abreu's shot was fumbled by Dixon, but the Bayswater custodian recovered to save at the second attempt, while in the third minute of stoppage-time Robson's free kick drifted over the top and at the final whistle it was Bayswater who were celebrating a place in the quarter-finals of the Night Series.
Bayswater Coach Mauro Marchione was delighted with the win. "It was a good game tonight, two good teams battling it out. We changed our formation slightly tonight to stop the Lions, who I believe are one of the best teams in the league, and it worked, I thought we deserved the win" said Marchione.
