It was a 24th minute strike, from over lapping full back Matt Danskin, that proved enough to claim all three points for Perth SC against a spirited Olympic Kingsway team in the first game of group F in the 2012 Night Series tournament.
The match was played at a frantic pace from kick off as both teams went for the proverbial jugular creating and spurning several half chances in the first 10 minutes.
The first real clear cut chance was seen as David Onoforo directed a diving header, narrowly wide, after great work on the wing from Adam Bachiller. This narrow miss proved to be a sign of things to come for both chances created and converted opportunities.
In a 14-minute flurry of missed opportunities, both teams pressed on and attacked in hopes to blow the game wide open. The first of which saw Kingsway keeper make a great glove save to deny a threatening Bachiller as Perth began to show their class.
Following that effort, Perth finally beat an outstretched Aaron Olow after great work from Onoforo provided Niederberger with the goal at his mercy. His goal bound shot was cleared of the line to the frustration of his side and the crowd.
Olympic were unlucky they did not take the lead two minutes later following a rapid counter that saw Perth fail to clear Elliot Rose's right wing cross past a growingly influential Louis Flatt. The ball reached Flatt 30 yards from goal and he arrowed a superb shot that cannoned off the very top corner of the goal.
Onoforo was proving to be a real handful at the other end and after he rounded Olow, and cut the ball back to Niederberger, many felt it would be the first goal of the game but for a last ditch challenge from Higgins that kept the score level.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 24th minute, by an unlikely source, when an over lapping Danskin found himself one-on-one with the keeper. Danskin remained composed and rifled a powerful finish past Olow like a seasoned striker forced to play fullback due to injuries.
Although eventful, the rest of the half produced no goals as a result of poor finishing, last ditch defending and outstanding goal keeping that kept Kingsway still in the match.
The same happened in the second half as Perth found Olow in inspired form.
They could not add to their lead despite Kingsway being reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Tandos subsequent a tackle adjudged to have prevented an obvious goal scoring opportunity.
All in all, Steve Dimitrovich was happy with the effort and determination his young side showed as they were able to play at such a pace for the entire duration.
Gianfanco Circati was also happy about the win and the chance to gain match fitness, but he bemoaned his sides inability to finish the game off and suggested that more finishing training was in order.
