Report by Peter Simcox
Bayswater City opened their Night Series campaign with a 4-2 win against new State League Division Two side Subiaco at Macedonia Park on Friday evening.
New striker Gustavo Catarcione scored twice in the space of sixty seconds in the first half and Joe Yoffe added a third, before Jordan Rhodes pulled one back at the end of the first half for Subiaco.
Paul McCarthy added a fourth for Bayswater in the second half while Niall Torpey completed the scoring with Subiaco's consolation goal in injury time.
The Premier League side opened the brighter, but it was Subiaco who had the first real opportunity. Simon Ralph played in Rhodes on seven minutes, but the former Stirling Lion striker's shot flashed wide of the target.
Bayswater then began to take control and from David Sesay's corner three minutes later John Kearney fired over from 12-yards.
Their pressure finally paid off and they were ahead on 18 minutes. Sesay was sent clear down the right and his cross was fired home by Catarcione from close range.
It was 2-0 moments later, this time Francisco Jorquera sent Catarcione clear, and he found Marcus Urban and fired home into an empty net.
They continued to dominate the game and it was 3-0 in the 27th minute. Joseph Sieh's pin-point through ball sent Catarcione clear again, the striker rounded the keeper but his shot from a tight angle hit the post, the rebound fell kindly to Yoffe who fired home.
It looked like a long night for Subiaco but they were back in the game on the half hour. Danny Malcom found Rhodes on the edge of the box and his powerful shot flew past Tom Dixon.
Bayswater almost added a fourth late in the half, but Kearney's free kick was pushed around the post by Urban.
The second half began like the first ended, with Bayswater dominating but they missed a host of chances to increase their lead, and they were nearly made to pay on the hour. Subiaco won a free kick on the right and Scott Wrightson picked out Doug Anderson whose header was well saved by Tom Dixon.
With Subiaco pressing forward they were caught out at the back and Bayswater wrapped up the points on 72 minutes. Second half substitute Gustavo Marulanda played a defence splitting ball into McCarthy, who fired home from 12-yards.
To Subiaco's credit they continued to press and they were rewarded in the third minute of stoppage-time when Wrightson headed home.
Bayswater City coach Mauro Marchione, although happy with the win wasn't pleased with the performance.
"I wasn't happy with the performance tonight; we were too fancy tonight and not productive. We missed five or six one-on-one's with the keeper which was disappointing. We need to learn how to kill games off, but it's still early days," said Marchione.
